A wide variety of Plug ‘n’ Play games are compatible with the R4 cards. Almost all of them work perfectly, some of them may lack some functions due to the firmware compatibility. Some games may experience slowdown or crashes when you are running them with slower cards.
Only a few of major emulators like ColecoDS and NesterDS work perfectly. Others like Picodrive and Snezzy do not work perfectly with the R4 ds cards. The homebrew and emulator files are saved in .nds format. But, considering that the R4 is relatively new flashcart technology, update resolving these problems could come out soon. For proper read/write speed, you must update the R4 firmware regularly from the original site or the provided CD. But, it is advised that you check the official website for regular updates, as more recent data can be found there. The process of updating R4 firmware and kernel is very easy and properly mentioned in the manual available online. A system file is generated only once when you update the R4 firmware. It is essential that you should leave at least 4MB of free space on the microSD card.
The R4 ds is compatible with the ROM Trim Tool, which removes the stuffing from the backup, which saves a lot of storage space. The R4 Save Transform is another important utility available for the R4 software which can convert the save game formats. All popular game formats used in Nintendo DS platform are supported by the save game converter provided in the miniCD. The R4 company is developing a universal game converter that will be able to cover all DS-compatible formats. The new converter is expected to be released as an update or a fix available on the original R4 revolution website.
